Founded in 1998, Microsoft Research Asia (MSR Asia, or MSRA) is the largest Microsoft Research lab outside the United States. More than 200 researchers and engineers located in Beijing and Shanghai are working on state-of-the-art technologies every day to solve the most challenging problems in computing and its interdisciplinary areas. At the same time, MSR Asia plays a vital role in accelerating region’s transformation and growth through innovation, which is driven in broad and deep engagement with academic communities and industry partners. Our partners include top universities, research institutes and large enterprises in markets including China-mainland, Hongkong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Singapore. Responsibilities

Execution of Research Agendas
  • Gains an understanding of a broad area of research (e.g., Machine Learning [ML], Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Statistical Modeling) and the corresponding literature and applicable research techniques.
  • Identifies the solvable components of a larger research problem.
  • Under instruction from others, researches new tools, technologies, and methods being used in the research community. Contributes knowledge around a specialized tool/method to support planning for research projects.
  • Brings a component of a research project to successful completion yielding new algorithms, prototypes, theories, tools, methods, analyses, insights, or collections of data which solve one or more components of larger research problem.
  • Understands and follows ethics and privacy policies when executing research processes and/or collecting data/information. Helps to develop and deploy computing technologies that uphold trustworthiness, robustness, privacy, values, and ethical considerations.

Impact
  • Gains an understanding of their research as it relates to Microsoft products or business groups and assists in technology transfer attempts, participating on standards organizations, filing patents, authoring white papers, developing or maintaining tools/services for internal Microsoft use, or consulting for product or business groups.
  • Collaborates with members of their research group to contribute to existing work on a research problem and assists in writing and/or presenting papers at workshops and conferences. Publishes papers as co-author or lead author for high-quality conferences and journals, with an impact similar to that of a post-doctorate.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in relevant field AND 1+ year(s) related research experience
o OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in relevant field
o OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.
  • Experience participating in a top conference in relevant research domain.
