The Faculty of Education is one of the largest faculties at Bielefeld University; its profile and structure are essentially characterized by the interplay of subject and educational science. Approximately 5,500 students study in the various programs of the faculty. Approximately 200 employees (including 22 professors) work in research, teaching and administration. This makes the faculty one of the largest faculties of educational science in Germany. It is home to twelve research groups and a total of six scientific institutions that are internationally networked.

The position is embedded in a research team that focuses on socialisation practices in educational institutions and the family, and explores the impacts of social inequalities in (early) childhood and adolescence on young people’s educational opportunities and success, subjective well-being, belongingness and participation in society. The research is situated at the intersection of childhood and youth studies, the sociology of education and the family.

Your Tasks
  • scientific collaboration on research projects and grant applications dealing with issues of social inequality, migration, gender relations and intergenerational relations in Germany and on a global level (55 %)
  • teaching responsibilities in the areas of general education (4 LVS) (25 %)
  • collaboration within the centre for childhood and youth research and actively promote youth studies at Bielefeld University (5 %)
  • support activities in developing international collaborations (5 %)
  • scientific participation in publications and presentation at conferences in Germany and abroad (5 %)
  • involvement in the academic self-administration (5 %)

Your Profile
We expect
  • scientific academic degree in educational sciences, sociology, social policy or a related field
  • strong skills in empirical research methods and quantitative statistical analyses
  • openness to mixed methods approaches
  • writing and speaking skills in English
  • project management skills, e. g., planning of data collection, coordination of research teams, working on a tight schedule
  • interdisciplinary mindset and creativity
  • high degree of commitment and determination

Preferred experience and skills
  • doctoral degree
  • knowledge of large, longitudinal German (e. g., NEPS, SOEP) and/or equivalent international and national data sets
  • knowledge of measurement techniques and scale development
  • experience in / knowledge of qualitative research methods
  • computer programming skills
